Do You Let Your Environment Control You?

This weekend is Super Bowl Sunday. And there is usually a good amount of drinking going on.  When you show up to a party, have you decided ahead of time the amount of alcohol you will consume?  Or do you go with the flow and see how it goes?  When you show up and go with the flow, you will have to make more decisions.  You will have to decide if you will have another drink each time someone asks.  And when your cup runs empty.  And when you need something to drink to wash down the party food.

Decision-making exhausts the brain. It takes more energy with each additional decision we have to make. And then we get decision fatigue (AKA willpower runs out). Then we make the wrong choice because we decide based on how we feel in the moment.

If we do not create and control our environment, our environment creates and controls us.

Our feeling brain takes over.  The solution: make the decision ahead of time.  Make the decision once.  “I will have 2 drinks and that’s it.” End of story.  No more drama.  The rest is easy.  Honor the decision.  One decision. Done.

“If we do not create and control our environment, our environment creates and controls us.” – Marshall Goldsmith.

Go and enjoy the party honoring who you want to be.
